It has been weeks since US audiences were introduced to Smile 2. Starring Naomi Scott, the sequel to 2022’s Smile follows the journey of pop sensation Skye Riley, who embarks on a world tour only to find herself at the center of a supernatural game of survival. One of the most harrowing aspects of the film was the introduction of Peter Jacobson’s Morris, who serves as an ally for Skye. However, the reality-bending events of the movie have fans wondering if Jacobson’s character actually makes it out of the film alive. So, what happened to Morris in Smile 2?
Here are all the details regarding the erratic character’s fate in the much-revered horror sequel.
Is Morris dead or alive in Smile 2?
Smile 2 does not explicitly address what happened to Morris towards its conclusion. As such, his status in the franchise is not clear at the present moment. Nevertheless, going by the events of the Parker Finn directorial venture, it is highly likely that the enigmatic nurse makes it out of the movie alive.
Appearing as the brother of a victim of the Smiling Demon, Morris attempts to help Skye battle the entity at every turn. His first in-person showing in the movie occurs after Skye experiences an unusual fit during her performance. Upon meeting her, Morris explains that the only way to get rid of the demon is to kill the victim long enough for the paranormal being to die. Skye initially refutes his idea and decides to tackle the issue alone.
However, after going through a horrific ordeal at her apartment, where she seemingly murders her mother, Skye reaches out to Morris to act on his plan. The duo set up a meeting at an abandoned Pizza Hut establishment in Staten Island, where Morris preps Skye for the procedure to stop her heart. However, the Smiling Demon soon takes over the proceedings, only to reveal that everything that had happened after the incident at her residence was a hallucination. The film concludes shortly afterward with, spoiler alert, the brutal death of Skye.
As such, the movie seems to suggest that Morris’ second appearance in Smile 2 wasn’t real at all, leaving what happened to him a complete mystery. Nevertheless, the fact that there is no sequence that explicitly highlights his death suggests that Morris is not dead.
Was Morris a real person or a hallucination in Smile 2?
Once again, due to Smile 2’s unique narrative, it is difficult to claim anything for certain about its events. Therefore, we cannot say for sure if Peter Jacobson’s Morris is a real person in the movie.
Still, Morris’ statements in the film indicate that he could be an actual person. The traumatized nurse shares several important notes about the Smiling Demon with Skye, informing her that the entity feeds on the mental stature of its target. He also helps Skye by revealing possible ways of defeating the entity, suggesting that Morris wasn’t hallucinating.
It is also impossible to identify the point where reality breaks in Smile 2. His appearance at the bar is most likely the last time Skye encounters Morris in real life. However, his existence could ruled out to be the absolute truth if Morris were to return in a potential third installment in the franchise.
