Wide receiver Jameson Williams for the Detroit Lions is in hot water for two reasons this time. The first is a two-game suspension due to him violating the NFL’s Performance Enhancing Substances (PES) policy and the second is due to an investigation over a concealed weapons charge. The latter has the potential of hitting Williams with yet another suspension. Here’s an explanation of what’s happening to Williams in the middle of the 2024 NFL season.

Why was Jameson Williams suspended?

Jameson Williams was suspended for testing positive for a “stimulant, diuretic, or masking agent” in violation of the PES policy.

The NFL announced his suspension on October 24, 2024, taking him out of two games, specifically the Lions’ Week 8 game against the Titans and Week 9 game against the Packers.

A statement by Williams, per NFL.com, said that news of his suspension “came as a complete surprise.” He says he doesn’t “take supplement or vitamins” and is cautious about over-the-counter medicine, but he understands that he is still responsible for everything that goes into his body.

Why is Jameson Williams facing a concealed weapon charge?

Jameson Williams is facing a concealed weapon charge for an incident that occurred with the Detroit police after midnight on October 8.

As reported by news outlet WXYZ, police pulled over a vehicle driven by Williams’ brother, who disclosed that there were two guns in the car. One of the guns was registered to Williams but he did not possess a concealed pistol license (CPL) for it, leading him to be handcuffed and placed in the back of the squad car.

However, after a sergeant arrived on the scene who was a Lions fan and recognized Williams, he was ultimately not arrested and was released without citation or incident. This eventually prompted an internal affairs investigation over the stop, with Chief James White saying that he was “very unhappy” over the incident.

Todd Flood, attorney for Williams, said in a statement that both pistols “were both properly registered and the driver in the vehicle had the proper credentials to carry them.”

The NFL’s Personal Conduct Policy says that players can be disciplined for an “illegal possession of a gun or other weapon,” so Williams not having a CPL for the pistol could lead to consequences. Any potential disciplinary action from the NFL for this incident will be made after the legal investigation is over.

In other Detroit Lions news, linebacker Malcom Rodriguez is facing an ankle injury while defensive end Aidan Hutchinson suffered a broken tibia.
