Johnnie Walker is one of the most iconic figures in the radio and broadcasting world. The DJ has been winning the hearts of his listeners with his Sounds of the 70s series on BBC Radio 2. However, fans are in for a heartbreak as Walker has decided to bid adieu to his popular show. So, why did DJ Johnnie Walker choose to retire from BBC Radio 2 after 58 years?

DJ Johnnie Walker announces retirement after 58 years

DJ Johnnie Walker announced his retirement from the broadcasting industry due to a diagnosis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

As Walker ended his time on BBC Radio 2, he expressed his gratitude towards his fans for supporting him in his journey. The 79-year-old stated how pleased he was with the time he spent doing the Sounds of the 70s. The show ended up developing into a Sunday Afternoon Club with everyone engaging in different activities.

He further added that he had lots of fun spending the Sunday afternoon with his fans and how that time won’t be the same again. Walker also mentioned that now Bob Harris will be replacing him in the Sounds of the 70s. As he closed the show, he said that it would be strange to be not on the airwaves anymore. However, Walker mentioned that the break from work would allow him to rest. The DJ signed off from the Radio Show stating:

”So thank you for being with me all these years and take good care of yourself and those you love and may we walk into the future with our heads held high and happiness in our hearts. God bless you.” (via Chronicle Live)

On October 25, Walker signed off from The Rock Show. Further, on Sunday he ended his broadcasting journey on the Sounds of 70s.
