While not too much is known about Sam Mendes’ Beatles movies, a new interview with screenwriter Peter Straughan has shed some light on how the movies will be made.

Speaking to Deadline, Straughan — who also wrote the 2024 film Conclave — revealed that all four movies will be written by different people. Straughan said that he was writing the film centered around George Harrison and that other writers had been “firewalled” off from each other, with Sam Mendes acting as the middleman of sorts between them all.

“I’m doing a biopic with Sam Mendes. Sam’s doing four Beatles biopics, and I’m doing George Harrison . . . We’re being firewalled off from each other, and Sam is in the middle,” said Straughan. “I don’t really think any of us know exactly how it’s going to work. I think the idea is that, because we’ve been isolated, we will tell the story in four very different ways from the point of view of our characters.”

What do we know about Sam Mendes’ Beatles movies?

In February 2024, Sony Pictures Entertainment announced that Mendes is collaborating with Neal Street Productions to create four separate movies about The Beatles. Mendes will direct all four movies, with each one following a specific band member’s point of view.

While the cast of the movies is not fully known, it was reported earlier this year that Paul Mescal, Barry Keoghan, Harris Dickinson, and Charlie Rowe have been tapped to play Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, John Lennon, and George Harrison, respectively. No official casting news has been made, however.

“I’m honored to be telling the story of the greatest rock band of all time, and excited to challenge the notion of what constitutes a trip to the movies,” Mendes said at the time of the announcement.

Mendes — known for directing 1999’s American Beauty, 2012’s Skyfall, 2019’s 1917, and more — is producing the films alongside Pippa Harris and Julie Pastor, while Jeff Jones serves as an executive producer. Filming is expected to begin in 2025 in the United Kingdom, while all four movies will be released in 2027.
