More information about Simon Kinberg’s planned new Star Wars movie trilogy has come to light, including what the projects may be about.

In a new report from Variety, it was mentioned that the decision for Disney picking Kinberg to head up the trilogy was his familiarity with the studios involved. Kinberg has a “continuing creative relationship” with Lucasfilm creative executive Carrie Beck and chief creative officer Dave Filoni, according to the report.

Kinberg was also personally contacted by Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy about the idea, after Kinberg was previously contacted about writing a potential Boba Fett feature in 2018.

The report also mentions the potential plot of the film. While various reports were unsure of whether or not the movie would be a continuation of the “Skywalker Saga” or a new thing entirely, Variety notes that right now, the plan is for Kinberg to “create a new saga,” but that with things still in development, anything could change in the coming years.

What do we know about Simon Kinberg’s new Star Wars movie trilogy?

Last week, a report noted that Kingberg — who is best known for writing and producing films like Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Jumper, and a number of the 20th Century Fox X-Men films — will write all three films and produce them alongside Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy

An early report from Deadline noted that the projects will be the continuation of The Skywalker Saga and will be episodes 10-12 in the long-running story. However, reports from THR and other outlets have noted that these films will not be set in The Skywalker Saga and will instead feature entirely brand new characters and a brand new story.

Kinberg is no stranger to the world of Star Wars, having previously co-created Star Wars Rebels, which ran for four seasons before ending in 2018, alongside Dave Filoni and Carrie Beck. He also served as a consultant on 2015’s Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, which was directed by J.J. Abrams, and received a “thanks” credit on 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Story.
