Disney has released the final trailer for Mufasa: The Lion King, an upcoming prequel and sequel to the 2019 live-action remake of the iconic animated feature The Lion King.
Directed by Moonlight filmmaker Barry Jenkins and written by Jeff Nathanson, Mufasa: The Lion King is set to hit theaters on December 20, 2024. The upcoming movie features the voices of Aaron Pierre as Mufasa, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Taka/Scar, Tiffany Boone as Sarabi, Kagiso Lediga as Young Rafiki, Preston Nyman as Zazu, Mads Mikkelsen as Kiros, Thandiwe Newton as Eshe, John Kani as Rafiki, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, and Billy Eichner as Timon, among others.
What happens in the Mufasa: The Lion King trailer?
Taking viewers back before the fan-favorite characters called Pride Rock their home, the final trailer for Mufasa: The Lion King opens with Pumbaa and Timon invading the screens before the actual trailer introduces Rafiki telling a story about a prince named Taka (now known as Scar) and an orphan named Mufasa as they embark on a dangerous quest to find a new home.

The official synopsis reads as follows: “Exploring the unlikely rise of the beloved king of the Pride Lands, Mufasa: The Lion King enlists Rafiki to relay the legend of Mufasa to young lion cub Kiara, daughter of Simba and Nala, with Timon and Pumbaa lending their signature schtick. Told in flashbacks, the story introduces Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost and alone until he meets a sympathetic lion named Taka—the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of an extraordinary group of misfits searching for their destiny—their bonds will be tested as they work together to evade a threatening and deadly foe.”

The rest of the voice cast includes Lennie James, Anika Noni Rose, Keith David, Donald Glover, Blue Ivy Carter, Braelyn Rankins, Theo Somolu, Folake Olowofoyeku, Joanna Jones, Thuso Mbedu, Sheila Atim, Abdul Salis, Dominique Jennings, and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter.
