First reported by Andrew Marchand of The Athletic, his retirement has been planned for over a year. His contract with TBS expired at the end of the season after he commentated for games on both TBS Sports and MLB Network for the past few baseball seasons. Here’s what happened to Bob Costas and where the 72-year-old legend is going after his soft retirement.
Where is Bob Costas going after retiring from baseball play-by-play?
While Bob Costas will no longer be doing baseball play-by-play, he will not be retiring from baseball entirely and will continue his work with the MLB Network.
The last game he covered for play-by-play was for the American League Division Series between the Yankees and Royals.
As noted by MLB.com, Costas will share his reasons for why he is leaving baseball play-by-play on Monday at 3 PM PT / 6 PM ET on MLB Tonight, an original program for the MLB Network. He has been a part of the network since it launched in 2009 and contributed to various shows on the channel, including The Sounds of Baseball, MLB Now, MLB Network Showcase, Costas at the Movies, and more.
Considering that Costas has had a broad sportscasting career, having covered other sports like basketball, football, boxing, NASCAR, golf, and the Olympics, it is possible that he will still provide commentary for those sports in the future.
Costas has been recognized for his broadcasting career, winning the Ford C. Frick Award in 2018 from the Baseball Hall of Fame.
In 2021, the sports interviewer became the host for the eponymous HBO series Back on the Record with Bob Costas. The program featured four episodes every year that saw him interview various names in sports and pop culture. The series was canceled after two seasons.
