Steven Knight, arguably most known as the creator of BBC’s Peaky Blinders (2013-2022), is no longer attached to the upcoming Star Wars movie featuring Daisy Ridley’s Rey from the sequel trilogy. In March 2023, it was reported that Knight boarded the project following the departure of screenwriters Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson.

Steven Knight’s exit as screenwriter can potentially delay Daisy Ridley’s Star Wars movie, which doesn’t yet have an official title, though several media outlets refer to it as Star Wars: New Jedi Order. In September 2024, rumors were claiming that the movie had been put on hold at Lucasfilm, and production would not begin until 2025.
Notably, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy of Ms. Marvel fame remains attached to the project as the director.
The upcoming movie is meant to take the story forward from the sequel trilogy, in which Rey was originally introduced. Initially a scavenger on the desert planet Jakku, Rey is revealed to be the granddaughter of Darth Sidious or Emperor Palpatine. At the end of the trilogy, Rey rejects her Sith ancestry and embraces the identity of “Rey Skywalker.” Obaid-Chinoy’s movie will reportedly revolve around Rey as she establishes a new Jedi Order 15 years after everything that happened in The Rise of Skywalker. According to claims made in April 2023, Rey might not be the main character of the movie, and might act “like the Luke [Skywalker] or the Obi-Wan [Kenobi] of the situation.”
Notably, Knight has an extensive filmography that includes the AppleTV+ series See (2019-2022), BBC’s Taboo (2017) and This Town (2024), and FX on Hulu’s The Veil (2024). He also wrote screenplays for movies such as Closed Circuit (2013), and The Immortal Man, a feature-length continuation of Peaky Blinders, slated to release on Netflix. Further, he also serves as the writer of Spencer (2021) and Maria (2024) and is the creator of the upcoming historical drama series A Thousand Blows, which comes out on Disney+ sometime in 2025.
